Havre de Grace, MD Real Estate

Located in Harford County approximately 45 minutes from Baltimore and less than an hour from Wilmington, Delaware, Havre de Grace is a picturesque small town with a true Chesapeake Bay feel. Overlooking the peaceful waters of the bay, Havre de Grace has long been popular with locals and tourists alike, who flock to marvel at the towns lovingly restored historic buildings, fantastic restaurants, and quaint Bed and Breakfasts.

Originally founded in 1785, Havre de Grace was received its French name from General Lafayette, who claimed that the area reminded him of the seaport, La Havre, in his homeland. In 1789, Havre de Grace nearly became the nation's capitol, but in a tie breaking measure, the speaker of the house voted for the District of Columbia.

In its early years, the waterways and canals in Havre de Grace made it a major trading post, and the city's economy has long been sustained by a maritime tradition. However, in the mid 20th century, Havre de Grace suffered economically, but has since bounced back to its former glory, due in large part to revitalization efforts begun by historical activists in the 1980's.

Today, Havre de Grace is a popular place to live, work, and play. Naturally, the waterfront is the main attraction and features a newly constructed boardwalk that measures nearly a mile in length. Since Havre de Grace boasts a rich history dating back to colonial times, the town celebrates its heritage with several museums including the Decoy Museum, the Stepping Stone Museum, and the Susquehanna Museum at the Lock House.

In addition, this vibrant Chesapeake Bay community is home to some of the most entertaining outdoor festivals in all of Maryland. Although the town is convenient to Baltimore and Wilmington, Havre de Grace has its own healthy economy and many residents are employed in town my companies such as Pepsi, Smuckers, Constar Plastic, and Harford Memorial Hospital.

Havre de Grace is part of the respected Harford County School System and features small public schools including Havre de Grace Elementary, Meadowvale Elementary, Havre de Grace Middle, and Havre de Grace High School.

With a median home price of $349,000, Havre de Grace is one of the most beautiful and affordable places to enjoy traditional Maryland waterfront living at its finest.
