Hampden, MD Real Estate

If one neighborhood embodies the essence of Charm City, that neighborhood would undoubtedly be Hampden. Known for it's quirky energy, unusual eateries, and vintage shops, Hampden has evolved from a working class community to a diverse and trendy enclave of artists, students, urban professionals, and blue-collar workers. Although a few single family, craftsman style homes exist in Hampden, the majority of the neighborhood is dominated by brick row houses complete with large front porches and shingled roofs.

In Hampden's early years at the start of the 20th century it was populated by thousands of German and Polish immigrants who flocked to Baltimore to work in its industrial mills. Although the neighborhood went through a period of decline following the economic difficulties of the 1980's, Hampden received renewed interest from the artistic community thanks to the redevelopment of industrial mills into studio spaces. As artists populated Hampden, the area slowly blossomed into one of Baltimore's most distinctive neighborhoods. Today, Hampden has a diverse population from all walks of life, each of whom enjoy the area's unique spirit.

Perhaps best known for the hip destination known as The Avenue, Hampden has become a cultural hub and entertainment district popular with local Baltimoreans and tourists alike. Its affordable, yet gourmet restaurants, independent boutique shops, and friendly neighborhood bars make 36th Street a bustling area every day of the week. Thanks to the Avenue and redeveloped mills like Meadow Mill, Clipper Mill, and the Mill Center, property values in Hampden have risen dramatically in the past decade. Additionally, new luxury condominiums are in development allowing everyone from single first time home buyers, to families with children to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities the neighborhood has to offer.

Located just a few miles from the prestigious Johns Hopkins University, Hampden has access to some of the best public and private schools in the city. As part of the Baltimore City Public School System, students in Hampden can compete to attend the well respected Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Western High School, two of the city's best public high schools. In addition, the Gilman School, Roland Park Country School, Bryn Mawr, and the Calvert School are in the nearby neighborhoods of Gilman and Roland Park.

With its safe streets, great cultural attractions, and convenient location just minutes to downtown Baltimore, Hampden has much to offer and home prices average $160,000.
