Catonsville, MD Real Estate

Listed as one of top 100 places in the US to live by Money Magazine in 2007, Catonsville is one of the most in demand housing markets in the Baltimore area, due in large part to its easy access to Baltimore and Washington DC. With a population of just over 40,000, Catonsville is a constantly growing, diverse, and dynamic suburb with a variety of housing options, from stately old Victorians, quaint arts and crafts cottages, and sprawling new constructions.

The development of roads has played a key role in Catonsville's evolution into one of the Baltimore Metro area's most desirable neighborhoods. After the opening of the Frederick Turnpike in the 1780's, Richard Caton was commissioned by his father-in-law Charles Carroll of Carrolton to develop the surrounding land. After Caton built his home, Castle Thunder on the newly developed land in 1787, the area became known as "Catonville". In the 1830's the name was changed to Catonsville, as it is presently known. By the 1880's, Catonsville became a summer retreat for wealthy Baltimoreans looking to escape the heat of the city and the working class made permanent homes in the area. By the 1910's, due to the increased ease of transportation to and from the city, many of the upper class permanently migrated to Catonsville as well.

Today, Catonsville is home to many historical sites and museums, such as the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum, The Townsend House and Pullen Museum. However, this suburban town offers up much more than a taste of Maryland history. Catonsville hosts a popular Fourth of July Parade and several Arts and Crafts Festivals. In addition, there are many shopping centers, restaurants, and movie theatres along Catonsville's heavily trafficked Route 40. Due to its excellent primary and secondary schools, as well as a highly rated university UMBC, central location, and convenient suburban set up, Catonsville only continues to grow more and more popular with buyers.
