Bolton Hill, MD Real Estate

Located just north of downtown in Northwest Baltimore, Bolton Hill is a vibrant and upscale neighborhood known for its turn of the century buildings. Most of the homes in Bolton Hill are late-19th century brownstones, complete with stunning original architectural details, generous square footage, and the charm of a bygone era. Many of these stately old homes boast three to four floors of living space, some of which include apartment quarters which may be rented out for supplemental income.

Originally home to Baltimore's elite bankers, merchants, and businessmen, Bolton Hill has gone through several phases in its complex history. As Baltimore prospered as a busy port city from the mid-1800's to the early 1900's, Bolton Hill established itself as one of the cities most prestigious addresses. During this time, beautiful brick row houses, lavish late-Empire style town homes, and stately Mansions were built along Park Avenue, Eutaw Place, and Mount Royal Terrace.

Bolton Hill served as home to many notable historical figures during this time, including the Cone sisters, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Woodrow Wilson, and Gertrude Stein. However, by the mid-20th century, as more and more wealthy Baltimoreans relocated to the suburbs, Bolton Hill had begun to decline. Yet, the undeniable beauty of the neighborhood won it the distinction of a Historic District in the 1960's and slowly the neighborhood was restored. Today, Bolton Hill is rebuilding its status as a high-end address in Baltimore city, regaining the bustling life it contained in its early years.

Bolton Hill maintains a reputation as an artsy neighborhood as home to the annual Artscape festival and the prestigious Maryland Institute College of Art. As the college continues to grow, Bolton Hill has become more desirable to families looking to live in an upscale, safe, and close-knit neighborhood in the inner city. In addition to filling the neighborhood with a youthful and artistic spirit, the college brings stability to the once problem neighborhood, demolishing vacant lots and buildings and erecting new academic facilities.

With its close proximity to Interstate 83, Bolton Hill is convenient to downtown Baltimore and the northern suburbs of Hunt Valley and Towson. Additionally, Penn Station, with its MARC commuter train to Washington DC is just minutes away, and the light rail allows easy access throughout the city and to the Baltimore Washington International Airport.

Homes in Bolton Hill come not only with an unbeatable location, but with unparalleled historical value, immense floor plans, and the grandeur of yesteryear.
